A Quirky Editorial Choice: Finding a Fun Display Font

I was staring at the blank canvas of a new recipe ebook cover, and something felt flat. The photography was vibrant, the layout was clean, but the title area lacked the personality I needed. This wasn’t just a collection of instructions; it was a guide to relaxed weekend baking. The typeface I’d chosen first was too formal, the second too playful in a childish way. I needed something friendly, confident, and with a touch of whimsy. That’s when I started experimenting with Humpy.

The Instant Appeal of a Casual Typeface

Humpy is a display font that doesn’t whisper; it speaks with a warm, conversational tone. Its rounded, slightly irregular letterforms have a rhythm that feels handwritten yet confidently consistent. There’s a casual friendliness to it, a personality that suggests approachability without sacrificing impact. For an editorial designer, that’s a powerful starting point. It sets a mood before a single word of body copy is read. On that recipe cover, Humpy transformed “Artisan Sourdough” from a clinical title into an inviting promise.

Building Visual Hierarchy with Character

In any publication, from a digital magazine to a printable planner, hierarchy is everything. It guides the reader’s eye and creates a comfortable reading experience. This is where a font like Humpy shines. Its inherent boldness and unique character make it perfect for the top tier of that hierarchy. I’ve found it excels in specific editorial roles:

It’s important to note that Humpy is a display font. Its strength lies in short-to-medium length text at larger sizes. For long-form reading—your body copy, paragraphs in a PDF, or newsletter text—you’ll want to pair it with a more readable serif or sans serif. This contrast is what creates professional, engaging editorial design.

Crafting a Cohesive Publication Identity

My recipe ebook was just the start. I began imagining Humpy across an entire lifestyle blog redesign. The font’s versatility means it can anchor a brand identity across multiple touchpoints. Think of a cohesive suite: the bold blog header set in Humpy, the same font styling the graphics for your weekly newsletter, and again on the cover of your downloadable gardening guide. This repetition builds recognition and trust. Your audience begins to feel your publication’s mood visually.

For a coaching workbook or a printable planner, Humpy can define the difference between a sterile task list and an encouraging companion. Using it for section headers like “Weekly Intentions” or “Progress Notes” injects a bit of optimism into the page. In a wedding guide or digital magazine, it brings a modern, relaxed elegance to feature titles and pull quotes, balancing beautifully with classic serif body text for longer articles.

Practical Considerations for Real Projects

Before committing any font to a client project or a commercial digital product, a few practical checks are essential. With Humpy, I always verify the commercial licensing to ensure it covers my intended use, whether that’s for an ebook sold on my site, a template for printables, or graphics within a paid newsletter. I also explore the included file formats (like OTF and TTF) for compatibility across my design software, web font converters, and PDF exporters.

Readability across mediums is another key factor. On screens, especially mobile devices, I test Humpy at various sizes to ensure the quirky details remain clear and don’t become blurry pixelated shapes. In print or PDF exports for home printing, its solid forms hold up beautifully, making it a reliable choice for physical worksheets or guide covers. The availability of multilingual support and alternate glyphs can also be a deciding factor for publications with a broader audience.

The Art of Thoughtful Font Pairing

A display font never lives in isolation. Its true test is how well it plays with others. Humpy’s rounded, friendly nature asks for a supporting cast that provides stability and readability. In my projects, I’ve found two paths work exceptionally well:

  1. With a Classic Serif: Pairing Humpy with a readable serif font for body copy (like Merriweather, Lora, or Source Serif Pro) creates a timeless editorial feel. The contrast between Humpy’s playful titles and the serene, readable paragraphs is deeply satisfying. This works perfectly for long-read blog posts, digital magazines, or recipe collections.
  2. With a Clean Sans Serif: For a more modern, minimalist aesthetic—ideal for a tech-focused newsletter, a sleek workbook, or a printable planner—team Humpy with a geometric sans serif (like Inter, Open Sans, or Montserrat). Use the sans for body text, captions, and finer details, letting Humpy be the charismatic lead.

Avoid pairing it with another overly decorative or handwritten font, as they will compete for attention and create visual chaos. The goal is harmony through contrast.

Choosing a typeface is one of the most intimate decisions in editorial design. It’s the voice of your publication. In a landscape of clean, minimalist fonts, opting for something with the character of Humpy is a deliberate choice to infuse warmth and personality into your reading experience. It tells your audience that your content is not only valuable but also created with a thoughtful, human touch. For bloggers, publishers, and creators looking to build a better, more engaging connection with their readers, that’s an asset worth having in your design library.
